Drivers Charged Following HGV Blockade on M1 Northbound
Two truck drivers have been arrested and their articulated tractor units impounded following a Garda intervention on the M1 Motorway in County Louth.
The incident occurred on the northbound side of the motorway, just past Junction 14 (Ardee), where Gardaí observed a number of heavy goods vehicles allegedly blocking the flow of traffic. The arrests come amidst a period of heightened tension on the national road network due to ongoing fuel price demonstrations.
Garda Intervention at Junction 14
According to a Garda spokesperson, officers responded to reports of alleged dangerous driving and obstruction on the busy transport artery. “Gardaí intervened and the trucks were directed to stop on the hard shoulder of the motorway,” the spokesperson confirmed.
The situation escalated following an engagement between officers and the drivers of the two lead articulated tractor units. Both men were subsequently arrested for alleged offences contrary to the Road Traffic Act.
Vehicles Impounded and Charges Filed
In addition to the arrests, Gardaí exercised their powers under the Road Traffic Act to impound both articulated tractor units involved in the incident. The vehicles were removed from the hard shoulder as part of the enforcement phase of the Garda response to the motorway disruptions.
The two drivers have since been formally charged in relation to the incident. They are scheduled to appear before Drogheda District Court today, 14th April 2026, at 10:30 AM.
Impact on Motorway Traffic
The intervention caused temporary delays for northbound commuters as emergency services secured the scene and arranged for the heavy vehicles to be towed. Gardaí have reiterated that while they respect the right to peaceful protest, they will take action where public safety is endangered or critical infrastructure is obstructed.
