Drogheda United Let Two-Goal Lead Slip as Galway Fight Back at Sullivan & Lambe Park
Kevin Doherty’s side made a flying start and looked in complete control at the break, but a stunning turnaround from Galway saw the visitors leave Louth with all three points.
Dream Start for Drogheda
Drogheda couldn’t have asked for a better opening, taking the lead after just three minutes when Mark Doyle found the net.
The hosts doubled their advantage inside 18 minutes through Jago Godden, with both goals coming from dangerous deliveries by Brandon Kavanagh.
Drogheda dominated much of the first half, controlling possession and creating chances, while Galway struggled to make an impact.
Galway Hit Back Before the Break
Galway pulled a goal back through Francely Lomboto before half-time, giving the visitors a lifeline despite Drogheda’s strong performance.
Even so, the home side still looked the more comfortable team heading into the interval.
Super Subs Turn the Game
The match turned dramatically in the second half as Galway manager John Caulfield made key changes that transformed the game.
Substitute Kris Twardek made an instant impact, scoring with his first touch to level the game shortly after coming on.
Moments later, Axel Piesold completed the comeback with a well-taken finish after a low cross from Twardek.
Drogheda Left to Reflect
Drogheda struggled to regain their rhythm after conceding and were unable to respond as Galway took control in the closing stages.
Despite a strong first-half display, the result will come as a major disappointment for Kevin Doherty’s side, who had looked on course for a comfortable win.
Match Summary
- Drogheda United: 2 (Doyle, Godden)
- Galway United: 3 (Lomboto, Twardek, Piesold)
