Fears Raised Over Further Delays to Ardee Castle Refurbishment

Fresh concerns have emerged that the long-awaited refurbishment of Ardee Castle is facing further delays, after the latest planned start date passed without any sign of work beginning.

The issue was raised at this month’s meeting of Ardee Municipal District, where councillors were told that the expected March commencement had not gone ahead as previously indicated.

Frustration Over Missed Deadline

Cllr Jim Tenanty highlighted that the confirmed start date of March 23 had “not taken place”, despite assurances given at the previous meeting that contractors would be on site.

“Has a new start date been set, or will it be put on hold like everything else?”

The delay has added to growing frustration among councillors, as the project has already been pushed back multiple times over the past year.

Timeline Slips Again

Members were initially informed in October 2025 that refurbishment works would begin before Christmas. That timeline was later revised to March, but no activity has yet commenced.

A construction contract was signed in January, paving the way for the regeneration project, but councillors are now awaiting clarity on when work will actually begin.

Major Regeneration Project Planned

Once underway, the works are expected to take approximately 18 months to complete and will include:

  • Structural conservation of the castle
  • Refurbishment of the adjoining Bridewell building
  • Upgrades to the courtyard area
  • Improved public access across all four floors

The project also forms a key part of the wider Ardee 2040 regeneration plan, aimed at revitalising the town centre and boosting tourism.

Key Heritage Asset for Ardee

Ardee Castle is widely regarded as the largest fortified medieval tower house in Ireland and remains one of the town’s most important historic landmarks.

Its long-awaited refurbishment is expected to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the structure for future generations.

However, with no revised start date yet confirmed, uncertainty remains over when the project will finally get underway.
