Warning Castlebellingham is ‘Turning Into M1 Rat-Run’
Serious concerns have been raised that Castlebellingham is fast becoming a “rat-run” for motorists trying to access the M1, with councillors also warning of growing parking pressures in the village.
The issue was highlighted at the April meeting of the Ardee Municipal District, where proposals for reduced speed limits across mid-Louth were being discussed.
Safety Concerns Raised
Cllr Pearse McGeough warned that increasing numbers of drivers are cutting through Castlebellingham from the Dundalk direction, using local roads as a shortcut to the motorway.
He called on Louth County Council to consider introducing traffic calming measures such as ramps to improve safety in the area.
Parking Pressure Growing
Cllr McGeough also raised concerns about the lack of public parking in the village, warning that the situation is worsening as new housing developments are built and planned.
He described Castlebellingham as having been “blighted by dereliction” in recent years, with illegal parking on footpaths now a daily occurrence.
A motion was tabled seeking the identification of a suitable site for a public car park, with the councillor revealing he has already identified a potential location.
Calls for Action
Cllr Jim Tenanty supported the proposal, warning that Castlebellingham risks becoming a “park and ride town” without proper infrastructure.
“We are encouraging people to park and ride, but if we don’t provide proper facilities it won’t work,” he said.
Cllr John Sheridan described Castlebellingham as a “lovely village” with strong growth potential, particularly with investment through the CLÁR scheme, but stressed that parking must be addressed.
Cllr Rachel Kerley added that improved bus services are likely to increase commuter demand for parking in the village.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Dolores Minogue also backed the motion, noting similar pressures in Ardee where commuters are struggling to find parking spaces.
Council Response
In response, Louth County Council confirmed that a review of parking bye-laws is currently under way in Dundalk, Drogheda and Ardee.
Officials said that the request for a public car park in Castlebellingham could be considered as part of the Louth County Development Plan.
The issue is expected to remain a key topic as the village continues to grow and attract more commuters.
