M1 Protest Drivers in Court: Bail Set with Louth Ban imposed
COURT: M1 Protest Drivers Charged with Dangerous Driving

Protest Drivers Granted Bail as Venue Switched Over Security Concerns

Two truck drivers accused of dangerous driving during a slow-moving fuel protest on the M1 have appeared before Drogheda District Court this morning.

The hearing, which was originally scheduled for Dundalk Courthouse, was moved to Drogheda at the eleventh hour. The decision to switch venues reportedly followed social media posts calling on protest supporters to gather at the Dundalk premises.

Defendants and Charges

Aaron Goss (22) of Ballymakellett, Ravensdale, Dundalk and Ryan Quinn (29) of Dobbin Road, Richill, County Armagh, both appeared before Judge Nicola Andrews. They are charged with dangerous driving on the M1 at Braganstown, Castlebellingham, on April 13th.

Inspector Kevin Toner told the court that Gardaí intervened at 7:00 PM yesterday evening after observing articulated tractor units blocking northbound traffic. He stated the manner of driving “caused a danger to other road users” before the vehicles were directed to the hard shoulder.

Gardaí have confirmed that both articulated tractor units involved in the incident remain impounded under the Road Traffic Act.

Strict Bail Conditions Imposed

While there was no Garda objection to bail, several strict conditions were imposed. Both men were remanded on their own bond of €300. Crucially, the court ordered that Ryan Quinn must stay out of County Louth entirely, with the only exception being for his future court appearances.

Judge Andrews issued a stern warning to Mr. Quinn regarding the exclusion order, stating, “I will revoke your bail” should any breach of the terms occur. Defense solicitor Paddy Goodwin indicated there were no issues with the conditions.

Next Steps in Proceedings

The two men emerged from the courthouse to a round of applause from a small group of supporters who had travelled for the hearing. They are scheduled to return to Drogheda District Court on May 11th.

At that time, the defense is expected to indicate if a plea will be entered or if a date will be set for a full contested hearing. The incident marks a significant escalation in the Garda “enforcement phase” regarding the ongoing national fuel protests.

The drivers were arrested following a week of disruption on the M1, even as many other protesters nationwide began to disperse following government fuel price announcements.
