Bus Éireann Opens School Transport Portal for 2026/2027 Academic Year
Parents and guardians in Ardee and the surrounding districts are advised that the School Transport Family Portal is now officially open for applications and payments for the 2026/27 school year.
Bus Éireann has confirmed that the strict closing date for all submissions is Friday, May 8th, 2026. This deadline applies to both new applicants and students who have previously availed of the service and require a seat for the upcoming year.
Key Deadlines & Fees
To secure a seat, account holders must either complete a payment or provide valid medical card details via the Family Portal.
- Post-Primary Transport Fee: €100 per child.
- Family Cap: A maximum charge of €220 applies for families with three or more children in the scheme.
- Medical Cards: Students with a valid GMS Medical Card (not a GP visit card) are exempt from charges but must still register their details on the portal by the May 8th deadline.
Eligibility and Concessions
The post-primary scheme generally supports transport for children living more than 4.8 kilometres from their nearest qualifying school.
For families attending Ardee Community School who live within that 4.8km limit, or for whom the school is not the nearest designated centre, “concessionary travel” may be available. These seats are offered only after all eligible students have been accommodated and are not guaranteed year-to-year.
Looking Ahead: The “School Transport 2030” Review
The Department of Education has recently published the School Transport Scheme 2030 report, marking the most significant overhaul of the service since 1967. The government aims to carry an additional 100,000 pupils by the end of the decade.
Key recommendations from the review include:
- Expanded Eligibility: Broadening the criteria to allow more students to access the bus network.
- Better Integration: Moving toward a system that works in tandem with existing public transport routes.
- Sustainability: Reducing reliance on individual car trips for the daily school run.
Phased implementation of these changes began in late 2024, with pilot programmes currently testing greater integration between school and public transport networks.
