Louth Commuters Set to Benefit from €165m New Enterprise Rail Fleet
Commuters traveling from Dundalk and across Louth are set for faster and more frequent rail journeys following the announcement of a massive €165 million investment in the Enterprise fleet.
The investment, funded largely by the PEACEPLUS programme along with contributions from the Department of Transport in Dublin and the Department for Infrastructure in Belfast, will replace the existing Enterprise fleet with brand-new, modern trains. The upgrade is expected to significantly improve the journey experience on the Dublin-Belfast line, which serves thousands of Louth passengers weekly.
Hourly Services and Modern Comfort
A key feature of the new fleet will be the transition to a clockface hourly service between the two capitals. This increased frequency is a direct response to growing demand and aims to make rail travel a more viable and sustainable alternative to the M1 motorway. The new carriages will feature improved seating, better Wi-Fi, and modern passenger information systems.
Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan has welcomed the procurement, noting that the Dublin-Belfast corridor is one of the most important transport arteries on the island. The move is also expected to cut journey times, making Dundalk even more accessible for those working in either Dublin or Belfast.
Local Impact
For Ardee residents who travel to Dundalk to catch the train, this upgrade represents a major improvement in infrastructure. It follows a series of positive local developments, including the €5.3m schoolbook funding for Louth students and the recent water maintenance alerts aimed at improving local utility networks.
As we celebrate the “great talent” in our county—from the Ardee Parade award winners to our U20 football stars—modern transport links like the new Enterprise fleet ensure that Louth remains a thriving and connected place to live and work.
