Collon’s Mattock Rangers Secure Green Light for Major Pitch Revamp
Mattock Rangers GFC are set for a significant upgrade to their facilities on School Lane after a wide-ranging planning application was approved by Louth County Council.
The Collon-based club, a mainstay of Mid-Louth football, has received permission to modernize its grounds to better serve both its players and the local community. The development reflects the continued investment in the “great talent” found across the county’s GAA clubs.
📋 Approved Improvements Include:
- All-Weather AstroTurf Pitch: Complete with associated perimeter fencing and netting.
- Floodlighting: Six 12-metre high lighting columns to facilitate evening training and matches.
- Ball Wall: A dedicated area for skills development.
- Community Walking Track: A new lit route for local residents.
- Infrastructure: New vehicular entrance and enhanced ball-stop nets.
Club Performance and History
On the field, Mattock Rangers currently compete in the John O’Neill Sand and Gravel Division 1 League. While they have faced a challenging start to 2026, sitting third from bottom after six games, the club’s underage structure remains strong. Last year, the successful amalgamation of Mattock Rangers and Hunterstown Rovers claimed the Louth Under 21 Football Championship with a dominant victory over Cooley in Darver.
The rivalry with neighboring Hunterstown remains a talking point in the village, following their closely contested Intermediate Championship Semi-Final last year, which required a replay before Hunterstown eventually progressed.
A Boost for Mid-Louth
This planning success follows a busy week for the region, including the announcement of €5.3m in schoolbook funding for Louth students and the upcoming Ardee Parade presentation night. With a new community walking track included in the plans, the School Lane facility is set to become a hub of activity for all ages in Collon, further strengthening the social fabric of the area.
