Green Light for Former Dunleer Railway Station Conversion to Gym Facility

Louth County Council has officially granted planning permission for the conversion of the protected Station Master’s Dwelling in Dunleer into a modern fitness hub.

The application, submitted by Ruairí Crofts in September 2025, sought a change of use for the historic building at Battsland from its previous status as a library to a gym and fitness facility. The site, which is a centerpiece of Dunleer’s Victorian heritage, is listed on the Louth County Council Record of Protected Structures (Ref: 13830005).

📜 A Piece of History

Built in 1881 and designed by N.A. Mills, the station is noted for its fine timber detailing and polychromatic red and yellow brickwork. The Council’s appraisal describes the structure as a lasting reminder of the “confidence of the Victorian rail era.”

Debate Over Rail Future

The development faced opposition from local Mid-Louth representative, Councillor Dolores Minogue. In a formal submission, Cllr Minogue argued that the station buildings and the corridor should be preserved exclusively for future transport use. She stated that reopening the line would represent a “meaningful and forward-looking investment in sustainable transport infrastructure,” aligned with national climate objectives.

Despite these concerns, the planning authority granted the application on May 7, subject to eight specific conditions designed to protect the integrity of the 145-year-old building. The project will include internal alterations to accommodate gym equipment while maintaining the exterior’s protected character.

Connecting the Community

This approval comes at a busy time for the region, following the **€165m investment in the Enterprise fleet** and the recent **Mattock Rangers facility upgrades**. As Dunleer continues to evolve, the balance between preserving the “great talent” of Victorian architecture and meeting the modern fitness needs of residents remains a key priority for the town.
