Free Book Bags for Almost 60,000 Children Starting School as ‘My Little Library’ Returns
From this week, children across County Louth who are preparing to start primary school this September are invited to collect a free “My Little Library” book bag from their local library branch.
Launched by Minister Norma Foley, TD, the 2026 initiative aims to support approximately 60,000 children nationwide during the significant transition from pre-school to primary education. Since its inception, the program has been a massive success, with an average of 20,000 young children joining their local libraries annually.
🎒 What’s in the Bag?
- Dual Language Options: Bags are available in both English and Irish (as Gaeilge).
- School Transition Resources: Carefully selected books and resources to help parents and children navigate the big step into Junior Infants.
- Library Membership: An invitation for the whole family to join their local library if they aren’t already members.
Welcoming Louth Families
County Librarian Maedbh Rogan McGann expressed her delight at the initiative’s return, highlighting that libraries are friendly, welcoming spaces for young families. “It’s a lovely opportunity for young children to discover the joy of reading, feel at ease in their local library and begin a positive relationship with books from an early age,” she stated.
All children completing the universal Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) pre-school program this summer are eligible. The bags are available from **11th May 2026** and will remain available throughout the summer months across Ardee, Dundalk, Drogheda, and Dunleer branches.
A World of Opportunity
Minister Foley emphasized that this is a wonderful opportunity for young people to “enjoy the wonder and the gift of reading.” The initiative complements other local educational developments, such as the **transformation of DKIT into Dundalk University College** and the wide range of **free part-time courses** currently available through the BTEI.
As Ardee prepares for **Biodiversity Week** and its own **Tidy Towns** efforts, fostering a love for learning in our youngest residents ensures the “great talent” of Mid-Louth continues to flourish for generations to come.
