Ambulance Workers Launch Industrial Action Following Stalemate in HSE Pay Dispute

Ambulance workers on picket line in Ardee

A picket line formed at the entrance to Ardee Ambulance Base on The Hospital Avenue this morning, as eight members of the National Ambulance Service (NAS) joined colleagues across Ireland in a campaign of industrial action.

The dispute centers on a long-standing row over pay and grading. Paramedics and EMTs are seeking a structure that recognizes the increased clinical complexity of their roles. While the picket lines represent a visible escalation, the Taoiseach Micheál Martin has called for renewed dialogue, stating it is the “only mechanism” to resolve the dispute.

⚠️ Guidance for the Public

While industrial action is underway, emergency life-saving responses remain the priority. However, the Taoiseach noted that asking patients with non-life-threatening conditions to make their own way to hospital is “not satisfactory.”

ALONE has urged older people not to be put off making a call for help. CEO Sean Moynihan noted that older people are six times more likely to need emergency services.

Concern for Vulnerable Residents

With over 200,000 older people living alone in Ireland, there is mounting concern that confusion over the strike could lead to delayed medical attention. ALONE CEO Sean Moynihan encouraged those in need to reach out to primary care, GPs, or pharmacists if they are unsure.

“We really just need to encourage everybody not to worry. But ultimately, make sure they get the support they need,” Mr. Moynihan stated.

In Ardee, the presence of the picket line on The Hospital Avenue serves as a stark reminder of the pressure on the local health system. The “great talent” of our paramedics is a key asset to Mid-Louth, and the community will be hoping for a swift resolution to the substantive discussions mentioned by the Taoiseach.

The Path Forward

Micheál Martin confirmed that “fairly sophisticated industrial relations mechanisms” are in place, but until a breakthrough is reached, the action is expected to continue. The HSE and unions remain in contact, but the standoff over grading reflects a deeper frustration among frontline staff who feel their evolution in healthcare has not been matched by their pay scale.
