A Landmark Move: DKIT to be Renamed Dundalk University College in QUB Strategic Alliance

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) is poised for a historic transformation as it prepares to be renamed Dundalk University College, marking a major milestone in its partnership with Queen’s University Belfast.

The transition to becoming a “University College of Queen’s University Belfast” follows an agreement first announced last November. Recently, Minister for Higher Education James Lawless brought a memo to Cabinet to enable the legislative amendments required to establish this new Technological University College.

📅 Key Milestones for Students

  • September 2026: Students entering this year are expected to graduate from the newly named Dundalk University College.
  • September 2027: New undergraduate and postgraduate entrants can register for prestigious Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) awards.
  • January 2027: First-year PhD students may also begin registering for QUB awards, subject to regulatory approval.

Driving the Dublin–Belfast Corridor

In a statement, DKIT President Dr Diarmuid O’Callaghan expressed his commitment to ensuring that students in the region graduate with a university qualification. Queen’s University President Ian Greer echoed this sentiment, describing the partnership as a significant step toward creating the first “all-island university group.”

The alliance is expected to boost economic growth and research opportunities along the Dublin–Belfast corridor, providing Mid-Louth students with world-class education pathways. This development coincides with a period of massive investment in Ardee, including the major regeneration approved for Moorehall and the planned expansion of town-center services.

A Global Vision for Louth

As Ardee continues to nurture “great talent”—from our **Transition Year students at Ardee Community School** to the hardworking volunteers of **Ardee Tidy Towns**—this educational upgrade ensures that the next generation has the tools to compete on a global stage while remaining rooted in the Wee County.

While we await the final legislative signature, the path forward is clear: Dundalk University College is set to become a designated awarding body in its own right, forever changing the academic landscape of the North East.
