CLÁR Funding Boost for Castlebellingham ‘Massive for Community’
LOCAL NEWS: CLÁR Funding Boost for Castlebellingham

CLÁR Funding for Castlebellingham Described as ‘Massive for the Community’

The extension of CLÁR funding to Castlebellingham has been described as a major boost for the local community following discussions at the April meeting of the Ardee Municipal District.

Councillors welcomed the news that the rural funding scheme has been extended to the area following a review by the Department of Rural and Community Development.

Support for Local Projects

The CLÁR programme is aimed at supporting rural areas that have experienced depopulation, disadvantage or geographical isolation.

Local authorities can submit up to 12 applications worth €65,000 each, along with two larger applications of up to €100,000.

Funding can be used for a wide range of community projects including:

  • Community facility upgrades
  • Playgrounds and recreational spaces
  • Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs)
  • Car parks and local infrastructure
  • Handball alleys and sports facilities
“This funding is massive for the community and presents a great opportunity for Castlebellingham.”

Councillors Welcome Investment

Sinn Féin councillor Pearse McGeough said he had seen the positive impact of CLÁR funding in other areas and believes it will greatly benefit Castlebellingham.

Fianna Fáil councillor John Sheridan also welcomed the announcement, highlighting the area’s growth and future potential.

“Castlebellingham is a growing area with new housing developments underway and planned, so this funding comes at an important time,” he said.

Cathaoirleach of Ardee Municipal District, Cllr Dolores Minogue, said the scheme would support local clubs and community projects.

Strict Criteria for Projects

Councillors were told that projects must be located strictly within the Castlebellingham electoral area to qualify for funding.

Louth County Council confirmed that even projects just outside the boundary — even if they serve the community — would not be eligible under the current rules.

Looking Ahead

Funding decisions are expected to be announced towards the end of 2026, with strong interest anticipated from community groups across the area.

There were also calls to explore whether similar funding could be extended to other parts of Mid Louth in the future.
