Ardee’s Cookstown Dairy Services Co-Sponsor Landmark 50th Herds Competition
The North Eastern Holstein Friesian Club has officially launched its annual herds competition on the farm of Paul and Marguerite Flanagan in Termonfeckin, marking a historic golden jubilee for the organization.
Established on May 17, 1976, at the Conyngham Arms Hotel in Slane, the club has grown into a vital knowledge-sharing and social hub for breeders across the region. This year’s competition is particularly significant as it celebrates 50 years of success, supported by joint sponsors **Cookstown Dairy Services, Ardee**, and McAuley’s Animal Feeds.

- Competition Commences: Friday, June 5th.
- Field Evenings: Stockjudging events scheduled for June.
- YMA Calf Show: Sunday, July 5th (at Flavours of Fingal).
A Legacy of Quality
The herds competition is a rigorous assessment that combines on-farm quality judging with official milk recording performance standards. Local prize-winners will move forward to the Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA) national finals, a stage where North Eastern club members have historically seen great success.
Club chairman Paul Flanagan and secretary Fr. Sean Dooley noted that the club’s longevity is rooted in family involvement. Over its five-decade history, the competition has only been interrupted by the 2001 foot-and-mouth crisis and the recent COVID-affected years.
