INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATE: New Dunleer Fire Station Project Resumes

Plans for New Dunleer Fire Station “Back on Track” Following €3m Allocation

Efforts to provide a modern, fit-for-purpose fire station in Dunleer have received a major boost this week with the news that the project is officially moving forward again.

The development had previously hit a stumbling block last year when Louth County Council was instructed to pause the project for two years. However, following a significant new funding allocation of €3 million, officials have confirmed that work will resume from exactly where it was stalled, much to the relief of local representatives and emergency personnel.

A Long-Awaited Upgrade

Fianna Fáil Councillor John Sheridan, who raised the issue at Louth County Council’s monthly meeting, has been a vocal advocate for the new facility. He highlighted that while €1.6m was originally allocated back in 2020, the current building has long been deemed inadequate for the needs of a modern fire service.

“The Dunleer Fire Station is simply not in an adequate building where it currently is,” Cllr Sheridan stated. “We had funding in 2020 and we got word last year that the project was to be stalled. Now we have a new announcement that there’s €3 million for Dunleer Fire Station.”

“This is very welcome news. I want to thank the Director for clarifying the project is now back on track.” — Cllr John Sheridan.

Site Procurement and Construction

Director of Services for Major Capital Projects, David Jones, informed councillors that the local authority will now pick up the process where it left off last year. The next critical steps in the development phase include:

  • Site Procurement: Finalizing the acquisition of the designated land for the facility.
  • Location: The new station is scheduled to be constructed on the Barn Road in Dunleer.
  • Modernization: The €3m budget will ensure a high-spec station capable of housing modern appliances and providing improved facilities for the crew.

Supporting Mid-Louth’s First Responders

The Dunleer crew provides a vital service not only to the town but to the busy M1 motorway corridor and the wider Mid-Louth area. A new station on the Barn Road is expected to improve response times and provide the team with the professional environment their service demands.

The project is expected to move into the procurement and planning finalization stages in the coming months as the council looks to deliver this essential community asset.
