SCHOOL NEWS: Community Clean-Up Day at Newtown National School

Newtown N.S. Issues Call for Volunteers Ahead of 50th Anniversary Milestone

As Newtown National School prepares to celebrate a half-century of education and community spirit, a special “Community Clean-Up Day” has been announced to get the grounds in top shape.

The school is inviting the entire community—including parents, past pupils, families, and neighbors—to come together on Saturday, May 9th. The goal is to ensure the school looks its very best for the upcoming 50th-anniversary celebrations, honoring the generations of students who have passed through its doors since 1976.

Event Details

The clean-up is designed to be a collaborative effort where “many hands make light work.” Even a single hour of volunteering can make a significant impact on the school environment.

  • Date: Saturday, 9th May 2026
  • Start Time: 10:00 AM
  • Location: Newtown National School Grounds

How You Can Lend a Hand

The school has identified several areas where local expertise and energy are needed. Volunteers are encouraged to help out in any of the following ways:

  • Gardening & Landscaping: Planting new flowers, shrubs, or trees to brighten the entrance and play areas.
  • Painting & Refreshing: Giving a fresh coat of paint to fences, walls, and various outdoor structures.
  • General Maintenance: Tidy-up tasks, litter picking, and general “spruce-up” jobs across the campus.
  • Handy Work: Assistance with small repairs or minor DIY jobs.
  • Donations: Bringing along spare paint, plants, materials, or specialized tools from home.
“Ní neart go cur le chéile — There is no strength without unity. This is a lovely opportunity for us all to work together and take pride in our school.”

A Milestone Celebration

The 50th-anniversary celebrations represent a major milestone for Newtown N.S. The school has served as a cornerstone of the local area for five decades, and the clean-up day is the first of many events planned to mark the golden jubilee.

Whether you are a recent parent or a pupil from the school’s earliest days, your presence and ideas are hugely appreciated. It is a chance to reconnect with the school and contribute to its future as it enters its next half-century.

Grab your gloves and some energy—we look forward to seeing the community turn out in force on May 9th!
