Review Highlights Challenges at Drogheda Psychiatric Unit
In June 2025, the Mental Health Commission carried out a four-day inspection of the 46-bed **psychiatric unit** in Drogheda. The report, published on June 22, indicates that while the facility provides vital mental health services for Louth and Meath, it faces significant challenges, maintaining an overall compliance rate of 71%—the same level as the previous year.
Areas Identified for Improvement
The inspection pinpointed 10 specific areas of non-compliance, six of which were recurring issues from 2024. Key concerns included:
Key Inspection Findings
- Consent and Medical Documentation: Inspectors highlighted a “significant training deficit” among medical staff regarding the Mental Health Act. One case involving inadequately completed consent documentation for medication was identified and rectified during the visit.
- Risk and Fire Safety: High-risk non-compliance was found regarding fire safety due to inconsistent record-keeping, incomplete evacuation plans for those with mobility needs, and a lack of regular fire drills.
- Seclusion and Restraint: The **psychiatric unit** also faced high-risk non-compliance regarding seclusion and physical restraint, with issues noted in staff training, documentation, and care plan updates.
- Environment and Privacy: Privacy was impacted by room window visibility, and premises compliance was flagged due to the presence of ligature anchor points that required better risk assessment.
Staffing numbers were noted as sufficient to meet resident needs, though high workloads made it difficult for team members to attend mandatory training on topics like life support and fire safety.
Signs of Progress
Despite these findings, the report also highlighted positive outcomes. The **psychiatric unit** has shown a notable improvement in completing general health assessments for long-stay residents. Furthermore, the facility remains compliant with safeguarding conditions, and residents who spoke with inspectors were generally positive about the support they receive.
