Just 1 Life: Ardee Transition Year Students Attend Major Road Safety Event

More than 300 students from across the county, including Transition Year pupils from Ardee Community School, attended a major road safety awareness event in Dundalk this week.

The “Just 1 Life” programme, held at An Táin Arts Centre on Tuesday, May 5, was hosted by Louth County Council in collaboration with emergency and health services. This landmark event—the first of its scale in Louth—focused on the life-altering consequences of road traffic collisions and the critical importance of responsible road use.

“This programme is built around one simple message: one decision on the road can change a life forever. Just 1 Life exists to give young people real stories and real experiences… to show how every individual has the power to make safer choices.”

— Eoin Murphy, Assistant Chief Fire Officer

Hearing from the Frontline

Students heard directly from those who deal with the aftermath of collisions every day, including members of An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service, and Fire and Rescue personnel. Professionals from Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, including mortuary and trauma staff, gave clinical and sobering accounts of the reality of road accidents.

Perhaps the most moving moment of the day was provided by survivor Aisling Morris and her mother, Doreen. They spoke with raw honesty about the lasting physical and emotional impact that a single road traffic collision has had on their lives and their family.

A Stark Reminder for Louth

Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Seán Kelly, noted that the community is still deeply mindful of recent tragedies, including the loss of five young lives in a single collision last November. Statistics shared at the event revealed that over the past decade, 71 people have died on Louth’s roads—nearly 40% of whom were under the age of 29.

David Conway, CEO of Louth County Council, emphasized that the event was not about frightening students but empowering them with the confidence to act responsibly as drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. This session was the first in a series of planned initiatives aimed at reducing road fatalities across the county.

As Ardee continues to celebrate the “great talent” of its youth—from our **rugby legends like Mick Lennon** to our students at **Ardee Community School**—programmes like “Just 1 Life” are essential in ensuring that our young people have a safe future ahead of them.
